The numbers are overwhelming. During their lives, four out of five people suffer from back pain. It is the second most common cause of doctor visits, and one of the primary reasons people take a day off from work.
Traditional medicine, however, offers few answers for the treatment of back pain. Anti-inflammatory drugs can block the feeling of pain temporarily, but may just serve to increase the conditions that cause the pain to begin with. And people who undergo back surgery are often worse off than if they had never had an operation.
Subluxations Defined
One of the main causes of back pain that chiropractors treat is referred to as a “subluxation.” In essence, a subluxation is a vertebrae that is out of alignment with the natural curve of the spine. This may be due to an overuse injury, poor posture, a traumatic accident, or a whole range of issues. Over time, the subluxation results in excess stress, leading to discomfort and pain.
Treating Subluxations
Chiropractic adjustments are designed to treat subluxations by realigning the spine to its proper position. When the vertebrae are aligned properly, they body’s inflammatory response typically subsides, and the back pain tends to decrease.
Treating subluxations through chiropractic adjustments has been found to reduce back pain. Combined with a more holistic approach to total back health, including proper movement habits and increasing spinal stability, subluxations need never cause debilitating back pain again.
